The evolution of light sources on film sets is accelerating with the arrival of the Ruby 1200 B from Filmgear. Presented at the Micro Salon AFC in Paris and at the BSC Expo in London, this 1200-watt bicolour LED fixture positions itself as an essential tool for cinematographers seeking power and flexibility.

A LED alternative to tungsten sources

The Super Beam 1200 Tungsten has long been a standard on film sets, valued for its power and beam quality. However, the evolution of LED technologies now makes it possible to offer a credible replacement, combining the optical qualities of conventional sources with the advantages of LED: lower energy consumption, reduced heat output, extended lifespan, and precise colour temperature control.

The Ruby 1200 B has been designed to reproduce the light quality of conventional sources while offering new capabilities unique to LED technology.

Technical specifications tailored to production demands

The Ruby 1200 B has been engineered to meet the needs of production crews in terms of flexibility, control and efficiency:

  • Power and focal range: 1200W bicolour LED, with a beam angle of 5 to 50°.
  • Motorised focusing system: precise beam adjustment via a dedicated dial.
  • Optimised weight: 15 kg for the fixture, 7 kg for the LED controller, facilitating handling on set.
  • Adjustable colour temperature: ideal for adapting to different shooting conditions.

A solution designed for on-set constraints

One of the major challenges in adopting LED as a replacement for tungsten sources is beam consistency. The Ruby 1200 B addresses this with a high-performance optical system that produces a clean, homogeneous beam, with no visible hotspot, regardless of the focal setting.

Moreover, its compact design allows it to be used on existing grip equipment without requiring specific adaptations. Cinematographers can thus integrate the Ruby 1200 B into their lighting setups without disrupting their established working methods.

A modular and scalable approach

Filmgear has conceived the Ruby 1200 B as part of a modular approach: the fixture can be equipped with various accessories (barndoors, scrims, diffusion frames) and is compatible with standard DMX and wireless control protocols. It thus integrates seamlessly into existing lighting workflows while bringing the benefits of LED technology.

The Ruby 1200 B from Filmgear is distributed in France by Groupe Zebra.
