Cinematographer Amine Berrada (AFC) shot the images of two very different, critically acclaimed films — one Moroccan, one Senegalese.

A graduate of La Fémis, Amine Berrada (AFC) reveals the full range of his talent in two feature films selected at Cannes 2023. On Kamal Lazraq’s “Les Meutes”, shot entirely at night, he crafts a very dark image that conveys the characters’ endless wandering. This crime drama won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize. By contrast, “Banel et Adama”, by director Ramata-Toulaye Sy, is a sun-drenched film bordering on a fairytale. This love story was nominated in the Official Selection at Cannes.

Cinematographer Amine Berrada talks to ARRI about his experience shooting these two films, both captured on the ALEXA Mini.

What interested me on Les Meutes was the match between very documentary-like framing and a very dark image, shot entirely at night. I loved playing with the codes of film noir on this one, the strong contrasts in particular (…) Banel et Adama opens with a very pastel, very soft exposure, like a waking dream.
