Awarded Best French Series at the La Rochelle Festival, “Follow” is a gripping thriller that blends social media with a police investigation. It tells the story of Léna, a young community manager working for the Paris Police Prefecture who helps track down a killer terrorizing the city. To create this claustrophobic atmosphere, the young cinematographer Martin Laugery relied on the ALEXA Mini LF. Since then, he shot his first feature film, Nelson Foix’s “Zion,” with the ALEXA 35 and is continuing with the same camera on the highly anticipated Prime Video series “Trash,” inspired by the “Loft Story” phenomenon. In this interview with ARRI, cinematographer Martin Laugery explains why ARRI cameras were the right choice for these three projects. “On some scenes, I thought I had overexposed due to the rush of filming, but when I reviewed the rushes in the evening, the image was perfectly exposed. The dynamic range of this camera is truly amazing. I also found the ALEXA 35 very practical to use. We often switched from handheld to Movi (Freefly) or Steadicam, and changing setups from one system to another is very quick with this camera. There aren’t all those plates to remove like on the LF. That’s actually why I decided to use the ALEXA 35 again on the Prime Video series “Trash” that I’m currently shooting. We work very fast, in many different locations, at a rate of four to eight scenes per day, with two cameras. For “Trash,” we need to be able to switch from handheld to dolly to Movi or Steadicam as quickly as possible. The ALEXA 35 is the ideal camera in this situation.”
