On Sunday 14 November, during the Camerimage festival, FilmLight announced the winners of a new award celebrating the work of colourists.
A new event appeared alongside the official competition at the 2021 Camerimage festival in Toruń, Poland. FilmLight, a company that develops colour-grading solutions, decided to honour the work of colourists and their contribution to the look of films.
The competition was co-organised by FilmLight, the ASC (American Society of Cinematographers), Imago (International Federation of Cinematographers) and the CSI (Colorist Society International).
The competition was built around four categories:
• “Theatre feature” for feature films
• “Television series and episodics” for series
• “Commercials and music video” for advertising and music videos
• “Special award for the most innovative use of Baselight”, rewarding the most ambitious work while showcasing FilmLight’s products.
The highly international jury included cinematographers such as Bradford Young, Ji Yong Kim and Anthony Dod Mantle, along with a fine selection of colourists such as Jet Omoshebi, Peter Doyle and the excellent Sylvain Canaux of St Louis in Paris.
And the winners are:
In the “Theatre feature” category:
• Eric Weidt for his work on “Mank”
Tied in the “Television series and episodics” category:
• Tony D’Amore for the series “Fargo”
• Damien Vandercruyssen for the series “Lisey’s Story” (DP Darius Khondji)
In the “Commercials and music video” category:
• Tim Masick for the Dior Spring Summer 2021 campaign (DP Benoit Delhomme)
In the “Special award for the most innovative use of Baselight” category:
• Colourists Gilles Granier and Fabien Napoli, together with technical director Arnaud Caréo of the French company Le Labo Paris, for their work on “Miss”
Given the success of the event — both in the number of entries and the ceremony itself — FilmLight has announced that it will very likely return in 2022.
